She wasn't supposed to be here.
Samheln watched her from the cover of Jardtengja's trees, a mix of emotions stirring through his heart. It was too dangerous for her to be there, he had told her never to come. Fjarhald's scent was still thick in her air--Fjarhald and Gennae. Those scents did not belong in the North, and under any other circumstance, Samheln would have driven them out. But this was not a normal circumstance. This was Eirný. Joy rushed through his disapproval. The conflict of both emotions made his heart clench.
"Eirný," Sam said quietly as he stepped out of the trees and into view. His gaze was almost pained as it sat steady upon her sweet face, but otherwise there was no emotion upon his features as he approached her.

The wolf watched her quietly as she searched for him. For a brief, whimsical moment, he debated playing a game with her that he had often in their childhood where he would hide from her and jump around to new locations whenever she got near, trying to make her dizzy. Those were days long past, though. They were not happy pups anymore, but grown adults. For Sam, at least, that meant happiness didn't even exist anymore.
But that moment was of the few moments that ever came close to happiness, when Eirný was around. Samheln closed the distance between them with a few long strides until he was near enough to press his wet nose against her cheek. Arlys leaped from her wolf's shoulders and fluttered down onto the ground beside him, chirping eagerly for Arrow to join her. Samheln, however, remained silent as he pulled away and studied his sister's face, wondering what news she had brought with her this time.
